Living in
Portimão
The complete guide for anyone considering a move to Portimão - from cost of living and climate to schools, healthcare and what daily life actually feels like.
Is Portimão a Good Place to Live?
Short answer: yes - particularly for those who want the full Algarve experience without the insularity of a small village or the tourist-resort atmosphere of Albufeira. Portimão is a proper city. It has hospitals, universities, a court system, government offices, supermarkets, restaurants that operate year-round, and a population large enough to feel genuinely alive in January.
It also has Praia da Rocha 10 minutes away, a marina that draws a lively crowd on weekends, one of the Algarve's most celebrated restaurant strips along the Arade riverfront, and easy access to dozens of beaches along the western coast.
The expatriate community is well established - primarily British, Dutch, German and Scandinavian - with English widely spoken throughout the city. Many residents have been here for 10, 15 or 20 years. This is not a transient expat scene.
300 Days of Sunshine
The Algarve has one of the best climates in Europe - and the western Algarve, where Portimão sits, is slightly cooler and more breezy than the eastern Algarve in peak summer. This makes it supremely comfortable for year-round living, not just holidays.
Spring (Mar-May)
16-22 °C
Warm and increasingly sunny. Wildflowers in bloom. Beaches largely uncrowded. One of the most pleasant times to be in the Algarve.
Summer (Jun-Sep)
24-30 °C
Hot, dry and reliably sunny. Sea temperature reaches 20-22°C. Peak tourist season - beaches and restaurants at their liveliest.
Autumn (Oct-Nov)
18-24 °C
Warm days, occasional rain. The shoulder season brings quieter roads and lower prices. Still excellent beach weather into October.
Winter (Dec-Feb)
12-17 °C
Mild and mostly sunny. Some rain, but rarely cold. Golf, hiking and outdoor dining remain perfectly possible. Very few frost days.
What Does Life Cost
in Portimão?
Portimão is meaningfully cheaper than most northern European cities. A couple can live comfortably on €2,000-2,500 per month excluding housing costs. A single professional can live well on €1,400-1,800 per month.
